Kestrel is a national-scale energy storage project designed to strengthen Ireland’s energy security and support the transition to a lower-carbon energy system.
Led by ESB Generation and Trading, Bord Gáis Energy and dCarbonX, the project would repurpose the decommissioned Ballycotton gas field for secure underground storage.
In the near term, Kestrel would provide strategic natural gas storage, helping protect Ireland from supply disruption, price volatility and wider system stress. Over time, the same infrastructure would transition to support green hydrogen or biomethane, enabling greater renewable energy integration while maintaining a secure and reliable energy system.
Ireland currently has 0 days of gas storage, compared with an EU average of around 90 days. The UK has 6 days of storage.
Natural gas was safely stored in Kinsale from 2001–2017. Underground gas storage in depleted gas fields is a proven infrastructure model used internationally to support energy security and system resilience.
Updated geological and operational analysis of the Kestrel project confirm capacity for at least 90 days of strategic reserve, based on average daily consumption.
Ireland currently imports around 80% of its natural gas via two interconnectors from the UK. As indigenous production from Corrib continues to decline, that reliance is expected to increase, leaving Ireland increasingly exposed to external supply disruption, price volatility and system stress.
