Kestrel is a joint venture between ESB Generation and Trading, Bord Gáis Energy and dCarbonX, established to deliver large-scale energy storage using proven infrastructure and private capital.
By providing strategic gas storage today and enabling future green energy storage, Kestrel will strengthen Ireland’s energy security and support the transition to net zero.
Aligned with Government policy and EU objectives, it is a practical, technically viable national asset based on infrastructure that has already operated successfully in Ireland and continues to support energy systems across Europe.
Our mission is to repurpose the decommissioned Ballycotton gas field for large-scale natural gas storage, with the ability to transition to green hydrogen or biomethane in line with energy policy.
Combining proven technology, subsurface data and the expertise of ESB GT, Bord Gáis Energy and dCarbonX, Kestrel offers a nationally significant, low-risk solution that strengthens today’s energy system while enabling its future transition.
Updated geological and technical analysis confirms the site’s viability and addresses the issues identified in the 2022 CEPA assessment under an N-1 disruption scenario. The proposed approach uses a geological storage model that has operated successfully for decades and remains a core part of energy security infrastructure across the EU.
Kestrel will be delivered by three experienced energy partners: ESB Generation and Trading, dCarbonX and Bord Gáis Energy.
Together, they bring a proven track record in developing, owning and operating large-scale gas storage and energy infrastructure across Ireland, the UK and Europe. The project will use structurally verified infrastructure and updated geological data, with development and construction funded through private capital.
